Gakuen Alice tells the story of a young girl, Sakura Mikan, whose best friend, Imai Hotaru, is sent away to a school for 'special' children (who, in the story, are referred to as "Alice"s) in faraway Tokyo. Mikan, unhappy with her friend's departure, decides to go to the school in search of Hotaru. In a series of strange events, Mikan enrolls at the school, and her adventures in a sort-of Wonderland begin...
